Creating FTP Accounts

An FTP account is used to upload and manage files on your web site. By creating unique FTP accounts, you can give different people different levels of access to your site files.

To Create an FTP Account

  • Login to cPanel and go to the Files section.
  • Optional step: If you are using the X theme, click FTP Manager.
  • Click FTP Accounts.
  • Enter a username.
  • In the Password box, type the account’s password.
    • Retype the password in the Password (Again) box.
    • For help generating a strong password, click the Password Generator button.
  • Specify the FTP account’s home directory.
    • The Directory field defines the top level of directory access that will be granted to the new account. For example, an account with a Directory assignment of /my-directory will not be allowed to access the / (root) directory; however, it will be able to access /my-directory and all of its subfolders.
  • If desired, set the disk space quota. The Quota field determines how much disk space will be allocated to this specific FTP account.
    • Note: You don’t have to set a quota. If a quota is not set, the FTP user is allowed to use all of your hosting plan’s disk space. If you have limited disk space on your hosting account, you should probably set a limit or quota on individual FTP accounts.
    • Click Create FTP Account.

Hint: For the Directory, if you erase everything and type a single “/”, then the user will have access to your entire home directory (anything outside of the public_html folder).

    Troubleshooting

If you have trouble uploading files via FTP, you may need to adjust the quota to allow more disk space for your account.

Note: You will not be able to exceed the disk space quota allocated by your hosting plan. If you are currently using the maximum disk space allowed by your plan, you may need to upgrade your hosting account or delete old or unused files.

    Existing Accounts

Upon creation, the new account should be displayed in the list below. This list contains 4 functions for existing accounts. You can:

    • Change a password.
    • Adjust a quota.
    • Delete an account.
    • Configure an FTP client.

Notice: A default FTP account is created automatically when you: sign up for hosting, create a cPanel account, create an addon domain, create a subdomain name, or enable anonymous FTP.
